How Search Engines Rank Your Webpage

If we speak technically, search engines use search bots to crawl the pages. They go from one page to the other to collect information and indexing them.

The algorithm analyses the indexed pages – considering a bunch of ranking factors to determine the sequence of pages to appear on the search results.

The search algorithms are designed to provide users with an efficient search experience by surfacing relevant pages.

Optimizing your website to the search engines considering the SEO guidelines will help your page rank high on search results.

Now, the question is – how does Google determine the “most relevant” or “best” result?

Well, there can be thousands of relevant pages for every search query. Each search query can bring millions of search results to Google.

For example, the search query “what is SEO?” brings up to 61, 60, 00, 000 results in Google.

To surface the “best” or “most relevant” information on the top, Google relies on three important factors, as below –

Topical relevance

It is the process used by search engines to determine how relevant the webpage is to a search query. Websites that have the same content are said to be relevant.

The backlinks from such website impact the position of the website on search results.

Getting backlinks from relevant sites can build relevant and improve your page rank. The number of relevant links and content on the website determines how strong the topical relevance is.

Informative Content

Google indexes the webpages based on the relevance and usefulness of the content. If the content on the website is not beneficial to the readers, Google won’t think of positioning the content on top of the search results.

RankBrain is one of the key components of the Google Algorithm that determines the most relevant result to the search queries.

Google measures the usefulness of the content based on the “user experience signals” generated by Google Algorithms. If Google sees that people like any particular webpage, it boosts the rank of that particular page.

Domain Authority

Domain authority is nothing but the reputation of the website. The search engines use domain authority as one of the ranking factors that predicts the website’s ability to rank on search engines.

It ranges from a score of 1 to 100, where the higher is the score better is the website rank. Several factors determine the website’s domain authority. Some of the factors are – inbound links, outbound links, age of the domain etc.

To improve the domain authority, you should consistently create compelling content, earn high-quality links and audit the link profile regularly.
